Humor

I have found that many a time, laughter is found through the splicing of two unlike things together, making an unrealistic comparison. The occurrence of something unexpected. But even more important than that is the tone of delivery. Something can be hilarious solely through its enunciation. This is something we have always been told, always known.

Where the difficulty comes in is finding what appeals to the largest audience. Inside jokes can be hysterical, but the audience is severely limited. In contrast, political comedy on late night shows broadcast to an immense audience because most everyone has at least some awareness about the political state of things at one time or another.

This main goal of comedy is appealing to the audience that you want to, but the achievement of this goal is met through a variety of tools. The artistry of humor is thus found. The tone of delivery, the topics chosen to breach, the context presented in, and many other aspects work together to determine how a comedic presentation goes, written or spoken or even sung.

A balance has to be struck between outlandishness and logical, and you, as the comedian have to determine how the audience will react to leaning in each direction. But it has to avoid either extreme, as always, because otherwise you're just stating boring facts or spitting out nonsense that has no connection to the real world. And that connection to the real world because if people feel drawn to something, they feel a relatable factor to it they're more likely to react, preferably with laughter. Though finding such laughter in an audience is far from simple, the key is often to understand their daily lives, their daily frustrations, their daily efforts, and to build off such as foundation of shared ideas.

Many of the same tenets that apply to more classic literature also apply to humor in somewhat the same way. Background knowledge, tone, stylistic devices, themes, and structure, as well as more are essential to both, but in humorous pieces the thesis isn't necessarily stated, though, to be sure, it is certainly to cause laughter and joy or to criticize something that needs criticism, improving the world.
