Purpose
Often times people say to, "Live in the moment," and, "To take advantage of the here and now." And this sentiment holds much value. You can't get lost thinking about what could've been in the past or what you want to do with your future, but you also can't get lost in the present either.
Tying to the ideas of existentialism and essentialism, both give ideas on how purpose is found, perhaps in conflicting ways, but with the same destination nonetheless. The formation of such pillars of thought is based within the ideas of future goals and past achievements, for without the past and future there is no purpose. The present is far more nihilistic than any other time. Just as most everything is meaningless without context, the current is pointless without somewhere you came from and somewhere your going. Why does it matter that water is flowing, if it is coming from and going to nowhere.
If you equate life to a journey, to get where you want to go you can't get stuck only doing the actions necessary for now. A plan is needed find your way to the destination you desire, to find success. And this plan is created from your past, your prior knowledge.
Is a life without a present and a future truly a life at all? Or rather is it a cardboard cutout, idling along without thought, without consciousness, without any context at all?
We can dream about the future, dramatize the past, but the present is just the depressing reality.
