Reflection

When you look into a mirror, you see yourself staring back at you.

    But who are you?

In life, its often difficult to avoid surfaces in which you see a silhouette of yourself looking back expectantly. Throughout this first semester, we have sought out such opportunities.

I have scanned the face of Oedipus and contemplated the power of my circumstances. I have met the gaze of Meursault and caught a glance of my world from the outside. I have stared into the eyes of Willy Loman and seen the person I staunchly endeavor to avoid becoming. I have peered into the emptiness of Leonard Shelby and remembered.

When one sees an aspect of themselves in someone else, they are tied to that person. They begin to compare themselves to each of the other persons attributes. The goal to see if they match at all and if any verification can be drawn out of such an encounter.

For we are fascinated by the way that others view us, some more than others, just as some care more than others, but it is an undetectable mystery that is held under our noses each and every day.

And the easiest way to peek a glance at your own influence is through looking at a mirror and seeing your reflection.

So when I look back on this past semester, I see what I created and wanted to create. I see my own viewpoint plastered on the themes contemplated in class. I see the application of my eyes to new versions of myself. I see what I want to see in myself and what I've done, for that's what we all do when asked to reflect.

We see in ourselves what we dream to be.
